What a Custom Thank You Card Is

A custom thank you card is a 5x7 folded card with a personalized photo — typically the wedding photo, baby photo, or event candid — restyled as art on the front, with a thank-you message printed inside. Thank you cards are the bulk-order champion of the photo-card category: the typical wedding generates 80 to 150 thank-you cards, the typical baby shower 25 to 50.

Timing

The thank-you card timing rules differ by occasion:

• Wedding thank-you cards. Within three months of the wedding date. The Knot's 2023 Real Weddings Study found 65% of wedding guests expect a thank-you note within three months; the gap above three months reads as "they forgot us."
• Baby shower thank-you cards. Within four to six weeks of the shower. The window is shorter than weddings because guests remember showers more vividly than weddings (smaller events).
• Bridal shower thank-you cards. Within two to three weeks of the shower.
• Funeral / memorial thank-you cards. Within four to six weeks of the service. The window is longer because the bereaved family gets cultural permission to take their time.
• Birthday or generic gift thank-you cards. Within two weeks of receiving the gift.

Sending a thank-you card late is much better than not sending one. The acknowledgment matters more than the timeline.

Picking the Right Photo

The photo on a thank-you card should reference the event being thanked, not the sender:

• Wedding thank-you cards. A favorite wedding photo — first dance, ceremony, or formal portrait. Avoid getting-ready photos (too informal) and reception party photos (too casual).
• Baby shower thank-you cards. A photo of the baby once they've arrived. If the cards go out before the birth, use the ultrasound photo. The baby photo carries more emotional weight than a photo of the shower itself.
• Birthday thank-you cards. A photo from the birthday party or the gift being used. Less common but works for milestone birthdays.

Watercolor — the universal thank-you default. Soft, gracious, hard to mis-send. Works for weddings, showers, birthdays, and any occasion where you want gracious-not-formal.

Modern Vintage Botanical — for showers and weddings where the visual aesthetic of the event was floral or editorial. Hand-painted holly, peonies, or eucalyptus around the photo.

Pencil Sketch — minimal and modern. Right for thank-you cards from corporate events, professional thank-yous, and recipients who lean editorial in their own taste.

Photorealistic — when the literal photo is the right answer. The AI handles color correction and sharpening; the print reads as a clean, finished photo on heavyweight cardstock.

What does not work for thank-you cards: Pop Art, Comic Book Hero, Action Figure, Caricature, Magazine Cover, and any of the comedic styles. They read tonally wrong against the gracious-acknowledgment frame of a thank-you card.

What to Write Inside

The custom inside message is the entire point of a thank-you card. Up to 250 characters printed on the right inside panel; left panel blank for handwritten signature.

The pattern that works:

1. Name the gift or gesture specifically. Not "thank you for the gift." Say "thank you for the cast-iron skillet — Sarah and I have used it three times this week."
2. Reference how you'll use it or what it meant. This converts "thank you" into "I'm telling you the impact your gift had."
3. Skip the platitudes. "Your generosity means so much to us" reads as form-letter language. Specific gratitude reads as real gratitude.
4. Hand-sign. For weddings, sometimes both partners sign on the left inside panel. For showers, the recipient (mom-to-be, bride) signs solo.
